About

I am a behavioral scientist with over two decades of experience doing research and leading research teams.

I currently work at Apple leading a human-centered AI research team with a focus on personalization, user experience, and language. We run research studies, evaluate models and systems, design annotation tasks and tools, and apply responsible AI principles to the development of AI/ML products. I do this work with a wide variety of cross-functional partners, including engineers, product managers, designers, and others.

Before Apple I was a professor of psychology at the University of Oregon (where I remain affiliated as a professor emerit). I directed a research lab that used computational social science methods (machine learning, natural language processing, network analysis), surveys, longitudinal designs, laboratory and field experiments, psychometric methods, ecological momentary assessments, and qualitative analyses to study how people express themselves and form social judgments in real-life and online spaces. We also developed and applied cutting-edge methods to assess preferences and behavior in diverse populations. Our work was funded by NIH, NSF, and private funders and had a strong emphasis on rigor, diverse representation, and methodological innovation. I also taught statistics, research methods, social and personality psychology, and ethics to undergrads and advanced grad students.

I have been active in the open science movement in psychology, working to make the field more inclusive and transparent. I have advanced these goals through a variety of leadership positions, including President of SIPS, executive board member of SPSP, associate head of the Department of Psychology, and others; and through teaching, speaking, blogging, and podcasting.
